Bobby McFerrin - Don't Worry Be Happy

Bobby McFerrin - Don't Worry Be Happy

Don't Worry Be Happy by Bobby McFerrin
Album: Simple Pleasures Released: 1988
Here is a little song I wrote
You might want to sing it note for note
Don't worry be happy
In every life we have some trouble
When you worry you make it double
Don't worry, be happy......

Ain't got no place to lay your head
Somebody came and took your bed
Don't worry, be happy
The land lord say your rent is late
He may have to litigate
Don't worry, be happy
Look at me I am happy
Don't worry, be happy
Here I give you my phone number
When you worry call me
I make you happy
Don't worry, be happy
Ain't got no cash, ain't got no style
Ain't got not girl to make you smile
But don't worry be happy
Cause when you worry
Your face will frown
And that will bring everybody down
So don't worry, be happy (now).....

There is this little song I wrote
I hope you learn it note for note
Like good little children
Don't worry, be happy
Listen to what I say
In your life expect some trouble
But when you worry
You make it double
Don't worry, be happy......
Don't worry don't do it, be happy
Put a smile on your face
Don't bring everybody down like this
Don't worry, it will soon pass
Whatever it is
Don't worry, be happy

This song reached #1 on the US pop charts, which is astounding for a song sung a cappella (without instruments). McFerrin recorded it using only his body to make all the sounds.

There were rumors that McFerrin attempted suicide after doing this song, and they are not true. However the rumors became so strong that even to this day people think Bobby is dead. This is untrue, he is alive and well.

The phrase "Don't Worry Be Happy" came from the Indian guru Meher Baba. In an interview with USA Weekend magazine, McFerrin explained that he saw a poster of Meher Baba with the phrase and thought it was "a pretty neat philosophy in four words."

What a wonderful world

The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people passing by

Saying, "How do you do?"
They're really saying, I...I love you
I hear babies cry and I watch them grow,
They'll learn much more
Than we'll know
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world (w)oohoorld

Someday I'll wish upon a star,
Wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where trouble melts like lemon drops

Lenny Kravitz - Fly Away

Fly Away by Lenny Kravitz
Album: 5 Released: 1998

I wish that I could fly,
into the sky, so very high.
Just like a drangonfly.
I'd fly above the trees,
over the seas, in all degrees.
To anywhere I please.
Oh,

I want to get away.
I wanna fly away. (yeah, yeah, yeah)
I want to get away.
I wanna fly away. (yeah, yeah, yeah)

Let's go to see the stars,
the Milky Way, or even Mars.
Where it can just be ours.
Let's fade into the sun,
let your spirit fly, where we are one.
Just for a little fun.
Oh, oh, oh yeah!

I want to get away.
I wanna fly away. (yeah, yeah, yeah)
I want to get away.
I wanna fly away. (yeah, yeah, yeah)

I gotta get away...
Girl, I gotta get away...
Oh, oh, oh yeah!

I want to get away.
I wanna fly away. (yeah, yeah, yeah)
I want to get away.
I wanna fly away. (yeah, yeah yeah)
I want to get away, I want to get away.
I want get away, I want to get away. YEAH!

I want to get away.
I wanna fly away. (yeah, yeah, yeah)

YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH!

This song was done very quickly, after the album was already finished. Kravitz originally intended it to be a B-Side only, but a friend who heard that song finally convinced him to call his record company, stop the whole procedure and added the song to the album.

This won a Grammy in 1998 for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. Kravitz won the same award the next 2 years for "American Woman" and "Again."

The lyrics are very simple, which makes the song great for sports montages and movie scenes where there is no deep meaning trying to be conveyed. Kravitz feels good songwriting can be done with very basic ideas.

Kravitz told Guitar World magazine that sometimes the sound of a guitar or amp you pick up makes you play a certain type of riff, and when he picked up the guitar that time, the sound made him play the riff for this song.

Mariza - Meu fado

Trago um fado no meu canto
Canto a noite até ser dia
Do meu povo trago pranto
No meu canto a Mouraria

Tenho saudades de mim
Do meu amor, mais amado
Eu canto um país sem fim
O mar, a terra, o meu fado
Meu fado, meu fado, meu fado, meu fado

De mim só me falto eu
Senhora da minha vida
Do sonho, digo que é meu
E dou por mim já nascida

Trago um fado no meu canto
Na minh'alma vem guardado
Vem por dentro do meu espanto
A procura do meu fado
Meu fado, meu fado, meu fado, meu fado

The Doors - Roadhouse Blues

Ah keep your eyes on the road,
Your hands upon the wheel.
Keep your eyes on the road
Your hands upon the wheel.
Yeah, we're going to the roadhouse,
Gonna have a real good-time.

Yeah, the back of the roadhouse,
They've got some bungalows.
Yeah, the back of the roadhouse,
They've got some bungalows.

They dance for the people
Who like to go down slow.

Let it roll, baby, roll.
Let it roll, baby, roll.
Let it roll, baby, roll.
Let it roll, all night long.

Do it, Robby, Do it!

You gotta roll, roll, roll,
You gotta thrill my soul, alright.
Roll, roll, roll, roll-a
Thrill my soul.

*improv*
Passionate Lady.
Passionate Lady.
Give up your vows.
Give up your vows.
Save our city.
Save our city.
Ah, right now.

Well, I woke up this morning
And I got myself a beer.
Well, I woke up this morning
And I got myself a beer.

The future's uncertain
And the end is always near.

Let it roll, baby, roll.
Let it roll, baby, roll.
Let it roll, baby, roll.
Let it roll, all night long.

Roadhouse Blues by The Doors
Album: Morrison Hotel Released: 1970

When Jim Morrison got drunk, he liked to sing Blues numbers at their jam sessions. They jammed on a lot of Blues numbers, and came up with this at one of the sessions.

Jim Morrison came up with the line about keeping your "Eyes on the road, your hands up on the wheel" after riding with his girlfriend, Pamela Courson, to a cottage they owned outside Los Angeles. She was driving erratically.

John Sebastian from the Lovin' Spoonful played harmonica. He is identified on the album as "G. Puglese" because he was afraid to be identified with The Doors in light of Morrison's arrest in Miami.

Guitar great Lonnie Mack played bass. The Doors usually did not use a bass player

This was the first song on Morrison Hotel. The album was a return The Doors' earlier style. On their previous album, The Soft Parade, they used a lot of strings and horns. Morrison didn't do much on that album because he was drunk for most of it and had nothing to do while all the instrumentation was being worked out. Before The Doors had a record deal, they played many Blues songs in their long club shows.

This has been called "the ultimate bar song," and it continues to be played by bar bands everywhere.

The Gathering - Strange Machines

THE GATHERING LYRICS - Strange Machines (1995)
It has always been in the back of my mind
Dreaming about going through corners of time
I always wanted to fly in strange machines

I wanna do centuries in a lifetime
And feel it with my hands
Touch world war II and Cleopatra
flying...

Could it be that my dream would come true
Building a machine that would actually do
What I want to do

Russian revolution, let's do it in one day
Beethoven and Gershwin I think that would be OK
More than anything I wanna fly in strange machines

I wanna do centuries in a lifetime
And feel it with my eyes
Watch Jesus rise. If he ever did
Flying...

I wanna do centuries in a lifetime
And feel it with my hands
Touch renaissance and Shaka Khan
Flying...

Back In Black by AC/DC
Album: Back In Black Released: 1980
This was released 5 months after lead singer Bon Scott died. The song is a tribute to Scott, and they lyrics, "Forget the hearse 'cause I never die" imply that he will live on forever through his music. With Brian Johnson on lead vocals, the Back In Black album proved that AC/DC could carry on without Scott.

Bon Scott saw Brian Johnson singing for another band in a pub, and was so impressed by his vocals, when he met back up with AC/DC he told them to get Johnson if anything should ever happen to him. After Bon's death, Angus Young called Johnson up and offered him the position of lead vocalist. Johnson told him where he could put it and hung up (he thought someone was pranking him). Eventually, of course, it worked out.

The band got the idea for the title before writing any of the song, although Malcolm Young had the main guitar riff for years and used to play it frequently as a warm-up tune.

This song was recorded in The Bahamas and produced in New York by Mutt Lange. Back In Black was one of the first big albums Lange produced. He went on to work with Def Leppard, Celine Dion, and Shania Twain (who he married in 1993). In the late-'70s, he produced 2 albums for the band Clover, which featured Huey Lewis on harmonica and Alex Call on lead vocals. Call explains Lange's production style:
"Mutt is a real studio rat. He is Mr. Endurance in the studio. When we were making the records with him, he'd start working at 10:30, 11 in the morning and go until 3 at night, night after night. He is one of the guys that really developed that whole multi-multi-multi track recording. We'd do 8 tracks of background vocals going, "Oooooh" and bounce those down to one track and then do another 8, he was doing a lot of that. A lot of the things you hear on Def Leppard and that kind of stuff, he was developing that when he worked with us. We were the last record he did that wasn't enormous, and that's not his fault, he did a really good job with us. Mutt is famous for working long hours. The story I heard about one of the Shania sessions, he had Rob Hajakos, who's one of the famous fiddle session men down here (Nashville). Rob was playing violin parts for like 7 or 8 hours and finally he said, 'Can I take a break,' and Mutt says, 'What do you mean take a break?' Rob goes, 'Have you ever held one of these for 8 hours under your chin?' Mutt really loves to record, he loves music and he's a real perfectionist and an innovator. An unbelievable commercial hook writer."

Bon Scott had several lyrical ideas for the album, but those were abandoned by the band in favor of new lyrics by Brian, Malcolm and Angus. Former AC/DC manager Ian Jeffrey claims to still have a folder that contains lyrics of 15 songs written for Back In Black by Bon.

The album had a black cover with the band's logo on it. It was a tribute to Bon Scott.

This was the title track to AC/DC's most popular album. It has sold over 19 million copies in the US, the 6th highest ever. Worldwide, it has sold over 40 million.

Michael Jackson - Dirty Diana

You'll never make me stay
So take your weight off of me
I know your every move
So won't you just let me be
I've been here times before
But I was to blind to see
That you seduce every man
This time you won't seduce me

She's saying that's ok
Hey baby do what you please
I have the stuff the you want
I am the thing that you need
She looked me deep in the eyes
She's touchin' me so to start
She says there's no turnin' back
She trapped me in her heart

Dirty Diana, nah
Dirty Diana, nah
Dirty Diana, no
Dirty Diana
Let me be!

Oh no...
Oh no...
Oh no...

She likes the boys in the band
She knows when they come to town
Every musician's fan after the
curtain comes down
She waits at backstage doors
For those who have prestige
Who promise fortune and fame
A life that's so carefree

She's says that's ok
Hey baby do what you want
I'll be your night lovin' thing
I'll be the freak you can taunt
And I don't care what you say
I want to go too far
I'll be your everything
If you make me a star

Dirty Diana, nah
Dirty Diana, nah
Dirty Diana, no
Dirty Diana...
Dirty Diana, nah
Dirty Diana, nah
Dirty Diana, nah
Dirty Diana, no
Dirty Diana...
Diana!
Diana!
Dirty Diana!
It's Dia...aa...aa...ana!

She said I have to go home
'Cause I'me real tired you see
But I hate sleppin' alone
Why don't you come with me
I said my baby's at home
She's problably worried tonight
I didn't call on the phone to
Say that I'm alright

Diana walked up to me,
She said I'm all yours tonight
At that I ran to the phone
Sayin' baby I'm alright
I said but unlock the door.
Because I forgot the key.
She said he's not coming back
Because he's slepping with me

Dirty Diana, nah
Dirty Diana, nah
Dirty Diana, nah
Dirty Diana, no

Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb

Hello.
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.
Is there anyone home?

Come on, now.
I hear youre feeling down.
Well I can ease your pain,
Get you on your feet again.

Relax.
I need some information first.
Just the basic facts:
Can you show me where it hurts?

There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ships smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I cant hear what youre sayin.
When I was a child I had a fever.
My hands felt just like two balloons.
Now I got that feeling once again.
I cant explain, you would not understand.
This is not how I am.
I have become comfortably numb.

Ok.
Just a little pinprick. [ping]
Therell be no more --aaaaaahhhhh!
But you may feel a little sick.

Can you stand up?
I do believe its working. good.
Thatll keep you going for the show.
Come on its time to go.

There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ships smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I cant hear what youre sayin.
When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse,
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone.
I cannot put my finger on it now.
The child is grown, the dream is gone.
I have become comfortably numb.
****************************************
Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd
Album: The Wall Released:
1979

Roger Waters wrote the lyrics. While many people thought the song is about drugs, Waters claims it is not. The lyrics are about what he felt like as a child when he was sick with a fever. As an adult, he got that feeling again sometimes, entering a state of delirium, where he felt detached from reality.

In a radio interview around 1980 with Jim Ladd from KLOS in Los Angeles, Waters said part of the song is about the time he got hepatitis but didn't know it. Pink Floyd had to do a show that night in Philadelphia, and the doctor Roger saw gave him a sedative to help the pain, thinking it was a stomach disorder. At the show, Roger's hands were numb "like two toy balloons." He was unable to focus, but also realized the fans didn't care because they were so busy screaming, hence "comfortably" numb. He said most of The Wall is about alienation between the audience and band.

Dave Gilmour wrote the music while he was working on a solo album in 1978. He brought it to The Wall sessions and Waters wrote lyrics for it.

Gilmour believes this can be divided into 2 sections, dark and light. The light are the parts that begin "When I was a child...," which Gilmour sings. The dark are the "Hello, is there anybody in there" parts, which are sung by Waters.

Waters and Gilmour had an argument over which version of this to use on the album. They ended up editing 2 takes together as a compromise. Dave Gilmour said in Guitar World February 1993: "Well, there were two recordings of that, which me and Roger argued about. I'd written it when I was doing my first solo album [David Gilmour, 1978]. We changed the key of the song's opening the E to B, I think. The verse stayed exactly the same. Then we had to add a little bit, because Roger wanted to do the line, 'I have become comfortably numb.' Other than that, it was very, very simple to write. But the arguments on it were about how it should be mixed and which track we should use. We'd done one track with Nick Mason an drums that I thought was too rough and sloppy. We had another go at it and I thought that the second take was better. Roger disagreed. It was more an ego thing than anything else. We really went head to head with each other over such a minor thing. I probably couldn't tell the difference if you put both versions on a record today. But, anyway, it wound up with us taking a fill out of one version and putting it into another version."

This was the last song Waters and Gilmour wrote together. In 1986 Waters left the band and felt there should be no Pink Floyd without him.

When they played this on The Wall tour, a 35 foot wall was erected between the band and the audience as part of the show. As the wall went up, Gilmour was raised above it on a hydraulic lift to perform the guitar solo. It was his favorite part of the show.

Παπαρίζου Ελενα - Heroes

Official song of the 19th European Athletics Championships 2006 (Sweden)

Desire the fire, it's haunting you
The passion and action you take me through
I'm living it, I'm loving it
This is where the dreams come alive
A shooting star in the night

Para siempre
Viva los heroes

To all the heroes, the rush of emotions
In this high and low, ah ay ah let's go
To all the heroes, we celebrate our nations
Let the whole world know, ah ay ah let's go
To all the heroes

Emotions are rushing out of control
A notion touching my body and soul
Can't fight it, can't hide it
Everything I'm feeling inside
Reflects the gold in your eyes

To all the heroes...

Viva los heroes, the rush of emotions
In this high and low ah ay ah let's go
Viva los heroes, we celebrate our nations
Let the whole world know ah ay ah let's go
Viva los heroes

Para siempre
Viva los heroes

Viva los heroes, the rush of emotions
In this high and low ah ay ah let's go
Viva los heroes, we celebrate our nations
Let the whole world know, ah ay ah let's go

To all the heroes, the rush of emotions
In this high and low ah ay ah let's go
To all the heroes, we celebrate our nations
Let the whole world know, ah ay ah let's go

To all the heroes

Paradise Lost - One Second

Paradise Lost - One Second - 1997
And for one second I lost my head
And for one second I wished that you were dead
And for one second you wished that you were here all alone
Hold back the tears that could fall for me
And for one second I lost my breath
And for one second I cherish what you said
And for one second it seemed that I was here all alone
Hold back the tears that could fall for me
And for one second I understand
And for one second my life was in your hands
And for one second you wished that you were here all alone
Hold back the tears that could fall for me, they fall alone.

The Crystal Ship - The Doors

Before you slip into unconsciousness
Id like to have another kiss
Another flashing chance at bliss
Another kiss, another kiss

The days are bright and filled with pain
Enclose me in your gentle rain
The time you ran was too insane
Well meet again, well meet again

Oh tell me where your freedom lies
The streets are fields that never die
Deliver me from reasons why
Youd rather cry, Id rather fly

The crystal ship is being filled
A thousand girls, a thousand thrills
A million ways to spend your time
When we get back, Ill drop a line
*********************************
The Crystal Ship by The Doors
Album: The Doors Released: 1967This song came from poetry written in Jim Morrison's notebooks. He wrote it after splitting up with his girlfriend, Mary Werbelow, in the summer of 1965. While the "Crystal Ship" is sometimes thought to represent drugs, Ken Rafferty from The Annotated Lyrics makes this case:

This song has nothing to do with drugs and everything about Jim Morrison's heavy relationship with his first love, Mary Werbelow. As a poet, he did nothing more than use transparent images for his relation to the past. He (Jim Morrison) hasn't let go of her as evidenced in the first line, "Before you slip into unconsciousness, I'd like to have another kiss."

That means the protagonist had already left her in the physical realm, but has not left her subconsciously. The thought of her still burdens him and he just wants another kiss to somehow make it feel better.

"Another flashing chance at bliss, another kiss." Again, he cannot seem to let go of their love, their relationship, and how much she meant to him.

"The days are bright and filled with pain." He's moved on and is now doing very well as a singer/songwriter in a rock band in L.A., but he still has feelings for her and this song is his testament to her that he still has feelings for her.

"The time you ran was too insane." Jim was one to mock even his girlfriends- he would tease others, but mostly, he was testing them. This line very well could be a reference to a time he felt bad about verbally teasing her- knowing that it upset her.

"The streets are fields that never die, deliver me from reasons why, you'd rather cry, I'd rather fly." A simple line that confirms the end of the relationship and that the protagonist is willing to move on. The streets are fields are his memories, and because they are vague memories now, they also present a reason why he can forget.

And that last stanza confirms his growing popularity as a lead singer for a rock band with an ever-growing popularity. The beauty of it though is how he is saying to her that no matter how big he becomes, he will still think of her, and even call her, when he gets the chance.

Jim Morrison was a voracious reader, and got the title from a Celtic legend in The Book Of The Dun Cow, a collection of stories compiled by about 1100 Irish monks around the 9th century.

This was released as the B-side of "Light My Fire."

The last words in this are "When we get back, I'll drop a line," which was widely interpreted as a reference to dropping acid.

Crystal Ship is the name of the Doors cover band in The Dead Milkmen song "Bitchin' Camaro."

Duran Duran covered this on their 1995 album Thank You

Led Zeppelin-All My Love

Should I fall out of love, my fire in the light
To chase a feather in the wind
Within the glow that weaves a cloak of delight
There moves a thread that has no end.

For many hours and days that pass ever soon
the tides have caused the flame to dim
At last the arm is straight, the hand to the loom
Is this to end or just begin?

Chorus:
All of my love,
all of my love,
all of my love to you now. X2

The cup is raised, the toast is made yet again
One voice is clear above the din
Proud Aryan, one word, my will to sustain
For me, the cloth once more to spin

Chorus

Yours is the cloth, mine is the hand that sews time
his is the force that lies within
Ours is the fire, all the warmth we can find
He is a feather in the wind

Chorus

All My Love by Led Zeppelin
Album: In Through The Out Door Released: 1979

Zeppelin vocalist Robert Plant and bass player John Paul Jones wrote this. The band had drifted apart, with guitarist Jimmy Page and drummer John Bonham hanging out together and rarely showing up on time for recording sessions. As a result, many of the songs on In Through The Out Door were put together by Plant and Jones, with Page and Bonham adding their parts late at night.

This song is not a love song in the traditional sense, rather a tribute to Robert Plant's son Karac, who died of a stomach infection in 1977 when he was 5.

This changes key on the last chorus.

Plant did the vocals in one take.

Jones played the synthesizer solo.

This was only played live during Led Zeppelin's 1980 tour of Germany.
